A catastrophe

I have so much to draft on this blog. My IIMC experience, where i had one of my best GD performances ever and a fabulous interview and then i screwed up everything in last minute. My trip to Mumbai where i once again felt the difference b/w Mumbai and other Indian metropolis. A stay at NITIE, perhaps the most picturesque B-school campus (they claim so !). But sorry, you can’t write about these things when your heart is bleeding and your eyes are red and you got mentally unstable.

India lost to Bangladesh !

Cricket is quoted to be game of uncertainty but i differ. I agree that there are many unexpected results but if you compare Cricket with other games, you’ll find that its more difficult for minnows to outperform the biggies. First reason of my thesis is the long duration of the game, where its more herculean for minnows to keep their nerves for the whole day. In Football or Hockey where the games are of just 1:30-2 hrs, you can defeat your stronger opponent by putting up an incredulous show during that small time, but to continue with that show whole day is not that easy. Second reason being, its more a team game. There are eleven players and even on a bad day, its high unlikely that all of them will be doomed (real matches show otherwise). Even if your star batsman doesn’t click then your other batsmen might and even if your batting line-up fail entirely then your bowlers can do the job atleast against the minors.

Then why did India lose ? Why did they put this poor show which make their more than billion population shameful ? Even after a long list of scams and controversies, India is the country where Cricket is still religion and Tendulker is still God (let his soul rest in peace now … he has been given enough trouble). A defeat in first match and that too against Bangladesh is non-pardonable. One rational mind may laugh at my emotional turmoil state and may say that its a surge of agitated delirious thoughts swinging in my mind and things will be fine as soon as India starts winning. I agree that victories and defeats are part of the game but there are certain instances when defeats can’t and shouldn’t be taken sportingly. World Cup is such a thing. Pakistan is out. World is laughing at them, at their bearded cricketers, at their god fearing captain who starts every speech with “Bis-Millah”. I fear that we are next in queue.

We lost. We lost against Bangladesh. I used to read columns, why India’s team is strongest this time ? We have accurate Zaheer (he gave sixes) and jubilant Sreesant. We have master-blaster Sachin who is having his last world cup and is loyal to bring WC home. We have World’s most dependable batsman as our captain, and Mr. strategist as our coach. We have Saurav Ganguly, who has made the biggest comeback story of the cricket century. Man, we lost against that country who has 3 players under 18, which has no formal cricket administration and which has no history in World cricket.

Still, hopes are not lost. We have minor hopes. Fans are weeping and praying. We may even win the World Cup. But is this the way, Indians should play ? They are irresponsible. Bad at reading pitches, bad at batting, bad at bowling and never had been average in fielding. Let them understand, this most populous nation has only very few good things to boast upon and perhaps Cricket as the only sports. They should not let us down. I have read somewhere that in Singapore, where an Indian and Bangladeshi lived in neighborhood, the Bangladeshi kid asked her mom to see if the Indian neighbor is crying ?
