Satire on growing regionalism and intolerance in India !

Should India be divided and no, I am not talking about dividing India into more states but into several nations. This is hurting but this is where we are leading to. Look at now not-so-uncommon articles in daily newspapers, be it growing intolerance towards other states as a nation, demand for more states, Fatwa against Vande Mataram, unconstitutional demands of disallowing Indians to work in India by a person sitting at the state highest constitutional post. I have pulled these articles from just last couple of days and nevertheless, all are highlighting the growing intolerance of Indians towards India.

Seems, Indians don’t want India anymore. There has been news to make Marathi billboards compulsory in Maharashtra else shopkeepers’s face the heat from local hulligans. There has been a growing wrath in Northern states towards north eastern states. Biharis don’t waste a minute to burn trains (in Bihar !) on every remark that’s passed by any street leader somewhere in Mumbai. What’s all this? Where’s our philosophy of ‘Unity in Diversity’ or ‘United, we stand’ ? I don’t feel that we are united anymore and this diversity which I was so proud of once upon a time, is making me fear the very worst, a nightmare. I recall, how delightfully I use to explain that India has 26 states and every state has it’s local language and how people in our country, invariably knows 3-4 languages. Now, I wish, had we had just one language, we would have had peace.

There is a growing intolerance from everyone to everyone. Marathis don’t want Biharis in their land, for Mumbai is already too crowded and all the Mumbai resources should belong to Mumbaikars. What they don’t realise is that what is Mumbai or who has made it up? Why is Mumbai a Mumbai and Patna not a Mumbai ? I’ll not divulge much but similar is the analogy, why is USA an USA and India not an USA? Guys, it’s all about people. Mumbai consists of more than 60% of migrants from Gujarat, Bihar, UP etc who just not don’t come themselves but brings humanpower, their intellect, an ambition, a dream and lot of hardwork as they have to prove themselves, establish their identities, to achieve their dreams. Who moves out of one’s home? Either one who is ambitious & good enough to utilize opportunities present in the outside world than his homeland can offer or one who is extremely needful, to toil and do any job that is needed to survive him and his family. And isn’t it that these are the people who build cities and demarcate Mumbai from Patna.

Guys, let’s break the bollywood and send every actor to it’s native. Amitabh can work only in UP movies, Shahrukh in Delhi cinema, Aishwarya, Bipasha in Bengali. Would Bollywood remain same ? If no then how can Mumbai remain same by sending people back to home who has been what Mumbai is.

I agree that there is a set of problem : Urbanization, Resource crunch, City infrastructure getting handicapped because of mass-migartion. But the way, it’s currently handled is unconstitutional or is the only way that any local leader will stand tall and issue warnings against every non-local? Why is India getting buried in Bengal, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu? And if our policy makers are not able to control this daily rape of India then let there be separate nations, let there be a Maharashtra country where every Bihari need Visa to move to. Let there be Tamil Nadu with the forced language as Tamil and complete ban on Hindi. This is where we are leading to and this is what our shrewed neighbor analysts have put in a white paper to divided India into several nations by providing fuel, arms, everything that the local leaders need.

The spirit of accomodation is needed to make a nation what it is. There is no limit to shrink to localisation, you can restrict another states to enter your state then you can restrict other cities’ people and then one neighborhood to another, finally shrinking everyone to one’s home. Do we want and need a secluded home? Isn’t it what we were couple of years back when we have to lend our gold to World Bank to feed ourselves ? Isn’t it when Government opened up the doors to another countries’ companies, we become what we are today. I believe, India has kept alive it’s culture for centuries while similar ones of Mesopotamia and Egypt are long vanished, it’s because we have been tolerant, we have been compassionate and we have taken the good out of every civilization that has come and ruled us, be it Arya or Mughal or English. What has happened that we have become intolerant towards our fellow nationals ? Our fundamentals are strong and we are not weak culture but now it’s an attack on those foundations and before the foundations are hurt, we need to do something.

Hmmm … The title date is my b’date but this blog is not about my B’day or how did I celebrate it or something related. Infact, This post is indeed about a day which I have spent and with amusing coincidence, the day turns out to be my ‘Happy B’day’ too

I have been planning to visit the city since the day I turn up to States. Fine, I have other big plans to go to California to visit some of my relatives, to go to Philly … to my friends, to Canada but one is expected to atleast see his city before moving out. I have been searching about Atlanta, places to visit, clubs to spent some time, other area of interests every Friday night with a promise that I would be moving next day morning, and if I can’t find anyone then I’ll go alone, but next day, I got up at 10 and start making new plans. This plan thing sucks :- )

Anyways this historical account is not needed and I should say that it was a great day that I spent. I went out with one of my hotel friends to deposit money into the next-door bank. I was wearing Pyjama, simple loose t-shirt and chappals (not even sandals!). Unlike India, Bank took only 4 mins to complete my request and we went on for a long walk and then we found that we have come to one of the big bus stations. Me and My friend were talking about going to Downtown next day but when we have come there, we both say together that should we go now? And next min, we were in some Bus. My God…all my plans, tons of information and maps print-outs were at my desk and I was not needing them at all. Believe me, it’s not that easy .. like here, the road names have always confused me, e.g., I can find Riverside Parkway, Riverside Road SE, Riverside Road NW and so many Riverside things and that too, all are quiet far apart … It’s really a pain to be here without car and having a car without GPS.

So we were in Bus and my companion was pretty confused at the stop in which we have to get down. He use to ask the same question to everyone sitting on all his sides and it’s so embarrassing. You ask someone something, she explains you and then you ask the same thing to the person sitting next to her. Anyways, he is like old married guy and must have had his bad share of experiences before but for me, it was awkward but okie! Awkward things are interesting

We reached to Downtown and it was really good. For the first time after coming here, I have seen so many people together. There is an area ‘Olympics Park’ which is like the centre of the city and all the major attractions like Aquarium, Coke Museum and CNN etc are 1-2 blocks away from each other, so that makes the place more happening. Hey, I have forgotten one thing to mention … as soon as we get out from the Metro station, I find a huge-huge public library and my dear old fatty ass- friend was in no mood to go and I forced him inside and spent around 30 mins after that he had become unmanageable and so we had to leave. Now, I have found my Saturday-pastime, I am going to go to that library, will spent entire day there … great, it sounds so pleasing! Then there is one ‘Underground Atlanta’ which makes me remember the ‘Palika Bazar’ of New Delhi. You can find all sorts of people, be it astrologer or guy painiting faces, cheap items with so many small restaurants and people around, it’s like any typical Indian market.

I don’t wish to dwell in the details of the places, which I have seen, there is always a better description available over internet. The funny part is I have been visiting these places of interest in my sleeping dress without even cleaning my teeth, forget about bath etc. Coming to room after a long tiring day, when I was lying on my soft bed, I was recalling my good old college days where such days were so common. I had gone to Agra from Gwalior without any plan, on my bike in scorching heat with no money in pocket. Another time, my friends put me into the cab while I was asleep and I opened my eyes on a national highway and I was like ‘What, When and How’??

My b’day was special this time because it gave me an unplanned day of my increasingly going routine life.

It was a pretty weird cum stupid day. After searching Atlanta information over internet whole night, and finally deciding to wander around the city and leave by 9:00 AM in the morning, i got up at 11:00. I cursed myself but that’s it. I guess, one can understand, how difficult it is to roam in a city which you don’t know and when you also don’t have a car. You cannot book a cab by asking cab driver to take you to any place and there seems to be no public transport (such poor country!), this is how I find it :- ), Atleast there should be some auto-rickshaws :- D

Anyhow, there was an embarassing cum exciting moment today. I was cooking the ‘parathas’ in my studio and it was first time, and i don’t know but somehow i over-cooked them and they got burnt and a lot of smoke filled my room. I opened the window, put the AC on full and also put the kitchen fan on full (actually, i didn’t do any of the three things, it’s just like i thought of saying people, if they ask me about this case ), and i don’t know why but suddenly fire-alarm started ringing. I was sure that it was because of my room’s cooking smoke, i went out, told runnning people, not to panic, that everything is fine, but noone seemingly was believing my words, so i came back and contiued listening my songs. Suddenly, i listened fire-brigade alarm, OMG …. these people have called fire-briagde too. It was going crazy and i was embarassed that it’s because of me (though, you guys can see that there was none of my fault !, even Ami says that we should cook and should not eat frozen food ), these guys are taking all this pain. I went to front-desk, tried explaining the situation to receptionist and the main officer there but they wish to get confirmed themselves … OK fine … they came to the room, checked everything, AC was full, window was opened, kitchen fan was on, and re-assuring everything, they left.

I was embarassed at one hand, and plus i was feeling good at their attentiveness and their quick response. These guys come within 10 mins of fire-alarm ringing. It was impressive !!!

But the moral of the story: No cooking, especially parathas from now onwards

Hmmm … not like one of my actual posts … just some swift words, sometimes these arbitrary scribblings are as good as the painting on the canvas itself ; -)

Today i got up at 5:00 in the morning and that too without any apparent reasons. Yup, I understand that many of you out there might not understand the importance attached with waking up at 5:00 as it may be that you can get up anytime, but yeah it’s something i have always wished … and just wished… never tried : D Hmm .. after getting up, I browsed through news sites and that too just for 15 mins. I always wonder about myself why the heck i spend around 1-2 hrs on the newspaper… i should not behave like media dustbin, I don’t need to know every crap piece of information that’s published. Anyways, no cribbing, it’s still morning : ) So finally, one advice to me: One should not spend more than 15 mins to the newspaper in the morning.

It was by then 5:30 and i felt like jogging : ) Yeah, i felt it so strongly that i got up from my cosy bed and searched for my sports shoes, they were found in the deep corner beneath the bed. I put on socks, cleaned the shoes and then put on them too. Another idea clicked by then. Someone has rightly said that mornings give you great ideas, it’s me only who prefer the dark nights rather than sunny mornings. The idea was like, i should jog with music! I got super excited and started looking for my headphones … but this search was not that easy as that of shoes search. How can things can get lost in my 20X10 ft room, i still have to figure out? But finally after 5 mins of honest search, i could find headphones in one of the long opened drawer! God helps those who help themselves.

It’s so good this far and better onwards. I put the music on, locked the room and literally started running from my room’s gate. I had revised ‘Goal’ yesternite so might be adrenaline was rushing inside … not sure! I then had a long jog, obviously, i could not keep running the whole while, nor i expect myself to be. I have practical expectations : ) but wandered for around 45 mins and came back to our dorm’s central reception.

I smiled at Receptionist, she smiled at me and i have NOT fallen in love, though my mood and settings were prompting me to. I sat with one Business magazine, read only the optimistic India columns, avoiding all negative stuff. Browsed through the whole magazine and then took another general current affairs one and browsed that too completely. It felt good, that I completed two magazines, one news-papar in just 45 mins. Cool guy

So after this, I took a juice tetra pack and now am sitting in front of this laptop, sipping, enjoying and blabbering. Let’s see how this whole day is going to be?

I am keyed up. Just a week more and my salary for next month will come! I don’t have any particular plans but still it’s good when a good sum comes automatically into your bank account and you can feel moneyed for couple of days. But this 1st, it’s not just the salary which will come to my account but so is the hanging of an Indian national who has been waiting to get hanged for past seventeen years.

I am not sure, if this is really a news which should get hold of attention that it’s getting and nor I wish to delve into its argument. If Sarabjit is really indicted in the bomb blast at Pakistan, then he should be hanged because terrorists are terrorists and they are not bound to any faith or nation or even humanity. Other way round, if he is not guilty then we can just give a sigh and speak out that World is not rational. Since pretty long back, innocent people are executed on mistaken identities, several times unknowingly and many times in premeditated way.

But what I definitely condemn is the very basic idea of making wait Sarabjit since last 17 years, just to get him hanged. God damn it! While guys like you and I would be waiting for salary this weekend, Sarabjit would be in anxious state of getting hanged or not getting hanged, for his sentence might get extended further by one more month. This is the whole mockery of human emotions, to make one feel so helpless, so shattered. I doubt, if Sarabjit would still be in condition to think of all these emotions. Last 17 years, he has been waiting for his execution and he has not been granted even that. This is worse than killing him, they are killing his spirits. Might be he got free, I wish, he could. But what morale, he would be carrying, what would have the jail walls made him? Would he know that since after him, the Indian business moguls have gone on a rampage of buying out the world while the Indian politics has remained the same, the sycophant of a dynasty?

It’s reported that he has not seen his youngest daughter and expressed desire to meet her. Believe me, this is emotional! To meet someone, who is born out of your blood for the first time with the fact that you are not going to see her again and die soon. How must it be feeling? I should not even try to express, it might be crime to Sarabjit!

Let me and you wait for our wages this 1st and let Sarabjit & family wait for if he would be alive or not that time!

Pretty late in the night, cold breeze blowing outside and I am feeling blissed with a cigarette in my one hand and coffee in other. I have started feeling good without any apparent reasons. Life has been monotonous, with long streched wearing out working hours but honestly, I am enjoying it, thinking, dreaming, sanitizing my thoughts, and blah blah.

I have not been writing since long back but haven’t stopped being philosophical and paining my friends. During one such discussion in our booze party, we guys were discussing about our ambitions and I was surprised to see the heights of people’s ambitions and it was pleasant. Noone should stop others from dreaming as one’ll achieve things only when he dreams. However, there is something which is said by myself perhaps subconciously (might be this thing I have copied from some book or some movie or some articile, i really don’t recall any connection !) and which I appreciated so much afterwards that I was patting myself like anything. In a nutshell, it’s like, it’s not the fulfillment of ambitions which matter more but the kind of journey you have towards that fulfillment.

And guys, it’s very true. People are in a habit of making the things complex. Keep things simple and your life too. We are born on Earth with an average age. Now, what one’s highest motive should be ? Simply to be leading that average years of age with great fulfillments, something which makes you say at the end of each day, each week, each month that yeah, I have lived the life. Do the experiments, take the blunts, ride the rugged bikes, win over the tough mountains, change anything and everything which you start getting bored with and never worry or get depress for damn anything. Keep yourself simple and do whatever your heart says and minds follows. Move madly towards your goal but at the same time, don’t forget the journey. Make friends in between that journey, which will perhaps be lifelong, appreciate poor jokes which makes you smile at their absurdity, don’t be afraid to commit mistakes and at the same time, don’t forget the lessons.

Hey doesn’t it sound that some school teacher is repeating words to you. Yes, it’s so. When I was in School, perhaps I didn’t appreciate these things so much which I am understanding now as I am experiencing them now and here’s another point to make. Don’t ever stop anybody from jumping into the well, just tell him well in advance the way to get out if you have been there. If everyone will learn from other’s mistakes, then he’ll not be commiting any mistakes and life’ll be too dull a place without kinky mistakes.

Enoough of lessons. It’s sleeping time !
